It’s no secret that airplane seats are shrinking, but proposed legislation is aiming to establish minimum seat sizes.

Called the Seat Egress in Air Travel (SEAT) Act, the bill is being introduced by House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee member Rep. Steve Cohen and Illinois’ Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

The bill is set to be proposed in January when Congress begins the new session; a similar law was in the making last year but did not make it out of the House of Representatives, Travel Weekly reports.

Since the 1970s, the average seat width has dropped from 18 inches to 16.5 inches. SEAT also aims to put forth a minimum distance between rows, which has gone from 35 inches to 31.
