As airline seats get smaller and smaller, concerns from New York Senator Chuck Schumer are growing louder.

The politician wants the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to set forth standards for the size of commercial airline seats. He cites that seat pitch – the distance between seats – has gone from 35 inches in the 1970s to 31 inches today. The width of the seats has dropped from 18.5 inches to about 16.5 inches.

The New York Daily News reports that there are currently no laws that establish how much space airlines must leave between seats, except in exit rows.
