The Federal Aviation Administration is easing limits on the number of hourly flights at Newark Airport, which could lead to lower airfares, the Washington Post reports.

The limitations went into effect in 2008 to combat congestion and delays; flights were capped off at 81 per hour during peak times.

According to the FAA, arrival and departure delays have dropped in the last eight years, and the number of scheduled flights has been well below the limits.

Without the restrictions, the airport’s operator – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey – predicts that fares will be cheaper because of an increase in competition from more flights by different airlines.

The flight changes will be implemented by the end of this October.
