Visitors to the Statue of Liberty will have to factor in more time at the landmark next May, when the new Statue of Liberty Museum is expected to open to the public.

The estimated $100 million museum is a partnership between the National Park Service and Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, and will feature interactive displays, museum galleries and  an immersive theater experience depicting the history of the statue and what it represents to our country.

Currently, a crowd-funding effort is underway to raise at least $50,000 towards completion.

Reportedly, the foundation has raised $90 million so far from various means of financing.

When it opens in May 2019, the museum will have unobstructed views of the iconic statue, all housed inside a state-of-the-art LEED Gold-certified building complete with a green roof.
