Montauk Charms With Natural Beauty

June 14, 2009    broadband

Montauk, Long Island is an unpretentious beach destination that won't set your budget back too badly. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

Fans of Montauk, Long Island say this Hamptons hideaway at the end of the line begins where the pretension ends. These days, it's attracting more than just surfers and sailors.

Visitors to Montauk love its natural beauty and there are resorts that cater to a mix of interests.

The Montauk Yacht Club, celebrating its 80th birthday on the East End, is situated on a marina on Montauk Lake. Evoking a nautical atmosphere, it feels like the entire place is ready to set sail.

Fresh from a multi-million dollar renovation, it still preserves a sense of history, when it was designed to be an anchor for developer Carl Fisher's "Miami of the North."

Mid-week family packages in June start at $289 a night and rise as the season progresses. For more information, visit www.montaukyachtclub.com.

The Grande Dame of the East End is Gurney's Inn, occupying a prime piece of beachfront real estate for 83 years. One of the country's original destination spas, it bills itself as the only one in the U.S. with seawater treatments.

Gurney's seems stuck in a time warp that, like the thalassotherapy faucets, will either be a turn-on or turn-off. I bet, however, if they tried to update the retro ambience, there would be a mutiny from their loyal following. Two nights in June cost $491, including a $50 spa credit. For more information, visit www.gurneysinn.com.

A third option is Sole East, a hipster's haven with two locations. The main hotel is spread over lovely grounds, with a heavy dose of minimalist chic. The young owner assures when they aren't hosting pool parties, families feel equally as comfortable here with their dog policy and free bikes.

Their beach motel is a no-frills option for visitors who put affordability first. Mid-week rates in June are $149 at the beach and $179 at the Inn. Visit www.soleeast.com for more information.

Now here's a D'Elia's Deal you don't want to miss at Gurney's Inn. When booking a three-night stay with daily breakfast and dinner, get the fourth night at 50 percent off if you tell them Val sent you.
