Save Tanks Of Gas By Cruising The Seas Instead

July 02, 2008    dial up broadband

Measure your summer vacation in tons of fun, not tanks of gas, and board a cruse ship that's within easy reach.

New York City-centric cruise ships can whisk you away to destinations as close as Bermuda and Canada, to more far flung ports in the
Caribbean, or go all the way on a transatlantic voyage.

Ships sailing from New York's West Side include Carnival's Miracle and Victory as well as Norwegian's Dawn and Spirit. Princess' Caribbean Princess and Cunard's QM2 depart from Brooklyn while Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas embarks from Bayonne, New Jersey.

There are cruises to fit every timeframe and budget, from four to nine nights.

With ports just a taxi ride away, you'll save money upfront on airfares. Here are several other ways to cut costs:

  • Book an inside cabin. Who needs a balcony when there's plenty of deck space to go around?
  • Skip the alternative restaurants that charge extra.
  • Buy soda cards for unlimited soft drinks.
  • Stop wining. BYOB and pay a corkage fee at dinner.
  • Don't take shore excursions that you can easily arrange yourself.
  • Stay on board the ship. Spa treatments on days in port can be discounted.
  • Connect with other passengers, not the onboard internet.
  • Do it yourself. Use the self-service laundry on board.
  • All bets are off. Boycott the casino.
  • Take Your Own Shots. Ignore the shipboard photographer.
  • Don't give your wallet a workout. Bypass fitness classes that charge an extra fee.
  • Adjust your tips at checkout if they've been automatically added to your account, and ask if you'll be hit with any retroactive fuel charges.
