Oh, the holiday season. It can bring about happy times, but it can also present some challenges – especially when it comes to travel.

However, that doesn’t have to be the case. The New York Times spoke with Kayak and is sharing tips on how to make holiday travel less stressful.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Travel on the holiday since there are fewer crowds and lower airfares.
  2. Fly direct to minimize the chance of lost bags, overbooked flights, and other disruptions.
  3. Ship your presents. This will lighten your load and save you from excess baggage fees.
  4. If you do bring the gifts, don’t wrap them – the TSA will ask you to unwrap them anyway.
  5. Alternatively, go in January. Crowds will be thinner and prices will be cheaper.
