The average price for car rentals has increased all over the U.S., with some airport rental rates up by nearly 75 percent compared with the same month last year, according to a report in the New York Times

In May, the average rate for a weekly airport rental of a compact car booked seven days in advance was $345.99, up 73 percent compared with $199.65 for the same month last year.

Though the demand for rental cars has decreased, companies have cut their fleets and are charging steeper prices.
