Snack In Rome, Get Fined
Until the end of October, people strolling by the monuments in the center of Rome will face a $80 fine imposed by City Hall should they be caught with a snack in hand.
Since the ban went into effect in early July, police have patrolled sites such as the Spanish Steps, the Associated Press reports, where they've already fined some snackers. The days of sipping drinks or eating gelato on the quintessential stairway are over for now.
The fines are intended to preserve the history-rich city that gets millions of visitors each year.
