Cruise Leader to Expand
Most of the business of Royal Caribbean Cruises is in the Caribbean, but next year, the leading cruise line plans to have year-round service in Asia.
Although the bulk of Royal Caribbean’s customers hail from North America, the company intends to lure more European and Asian travelers, the International Herald Tribune reports.
Twenty years ago, the cruise company began sailing its Sovereign of the Seas, a 73,192-ton ship. In June 2008 it introduced its 220,000-ton Oasis of the Seas, which is set to sail in 2009 and will be the largest cruise ship afloat.
Just after Carnival, Royal Caribbean is the second-largest cruise company in the world. Both are based in Miami.
Royal Caribbean's first quarter profits of 2008 were $75.6 million, a spike from the $8.8 million profit the year before.
Consumers are cutting expenses, but are still holding on to their vacations.
