Pack your pooch!

Amtrak is announcing that passengers can now travel with small pets from Boston to Lynchburg, Newport News, and Norfolk on the Northeast Regional service and between Boston and Brunswick on the Downeaster route during a pilot program that ends on Feb. 15, 2016.

Passengers may bring along one cat or one small dog in an enclosed carrier for journeys up to seven hours long. The pet and its carrier must weigh a combined 20 pounds or less and be put under the owner’s seat. Pets must be at least eight weeks old and have current vaccination records.

Advance reservations are required at a $25 surcharge. Arrive 30 minutes prior to train departure to check-in at the counter and fill out a pet waiver form.

When the pilot program ends, it will be reviewed for possible improvements and continuation.
