For some travelers, renting a car during a trip is a necessity – but it isn’t always easy.

Specialist provider of CDW/LDW insurance Insuremyrentalcar.com is releasing the results of its YouGov survey, which polled 2,358 adults (1,372 of which have rented a car) on the process of renting a car. Twenty-one percent find it to be stressful.

The poll finds that 19 percent of renters read the rental’s terms and conditions in full, as opposed to the 36 percent who skim the fine print.

Unsurprisingly, not being familiar with the terms and conditions can impact drivers: 63 percent of car renters are unaware that some rental companies will charge for gas if the customer doesn’t turn in a receipt for fuel when the car is dropped off, regardless if the tank is full. Fifty-four percent of car rental drivers don’t know that the driver is responsible for ensuring the vehicle complies with local and federal driving laws.

The website is also sharing tips for renting a car:

  • Read through all the paperwork when getting your rental.
  • Carefully inspect the vehicle and tires before renting and upon returning it.
  • Try to return the vehicle during normal business hours so you and the staff can verify that there are no damages on the car.
