Bed bugs are never a welcome sight in a hotel room. Here’s how to properly search for them, thanks to tips from pest control company Rentokil.

  1. Start with the bed, going along the mattress seams and under it. Look in the joints of the frame, along the slats, and in the crevices of the frame and headboard.
  2. Sofas and throw pillows should be checked along the seams, around zips, and inside the covers.
  3. Scrutinize where furniture and carpets meet the walls, as well as the seals of doors and drawers.
  4. Don’t miss the night stands: search around any items sitting on top of them, along cracks and crevices, and in the drawers.
  5. Avoid putting luggage on or near beds. Check out the fold-out luggage rack.
  6. Keep an eye out for blood smears, black marks, eggs, and shed skin.

If you think you have the critters, ask to switch to a room that isn’t directly above or next to the infestation.
