When traveling, it’s always temping to connect to public Wi-Fi networks, especially when you’re nearing your network data limit.

TravelPulse is sharing tips on how to keep your information safe when using free Wi-Fi networks from tech expert Shaun Murphy, PrivateGiant CEO and founder of SNDR.

  1. Listen to your apps/devices when they say your connection isn’t secure. If the access point asks you to install anything like software, a plugin, or security certificate before connecting, disconnect immediately. This can potentially install malware on the device.
  2. Only connect to Wi-Fi access points that require you to type in a password via the device’s Wi-Fi connection screen – and not in a browser.
  3. Install a separate web browser for traveling or connecting to unknown Wi-Fi access points. Use it for basic surfing, but not to log into your banking, email, social media accounts, or post personally identifiable information.
  4. See if your home router has a virtual private network (VPN). You can safely connect to your home network from any Wi-Fi access point, secure or not.
  5. Make sure you type in websites using HTTPS and not just HTTP at the beginning of the URL.
