Looking for a getaway that’s a little different? How about a French chateau with Southern hospitality and a U.S. White House, all in one trip?
August is a hot month for deals at the tony Chateau Elan Winery and Resort near Atlanta. It’s a world unto itself, with championship golf, a winery, European health spa and restaurants ranging from Southern, to an Irish pub actually built in Ireland and reassembled in Georgia. There’s also a renowned culinary studio offering classes taught by the resort’s award-winning chef.
The resort is offerng a “Hot Date” Sunday overnight stay for $99 plus tax on August 15 and 22.
There’s also a three-night package with the third night free. The “Got to Getaway” promotion includes deluxe overnight accommodation for two and a $25-per-night resort credit. A winery tour and tasting, along with free valet parking, are also included. Cost is $399, excluding taxes and fees. Offer is good until September 3.
Both packages are based on availability. For more information: www.chateauelan.com or 1-800-233-WINE (9463).

Chateau Elan is the perfect jumping-off point for a trip to yet another world. The 90-minute drive down an interstate and winding country roads (dotted with authentic Southern barbecue eateries) lead to Georgia’s largest state park and the pretty town of Warm Springs – named for its naturally heated mineral springs.
The relaxing retreat has captivated millions, including late President Franklin Roosevelt, who bathed in the waters to ease the pain of polio. He so loved the place, he built a home there — a modest cottage dubbed the “Little White House.” He spent a significant part of his presidency there, and it’s also where he died. (Roosevelt’s love affair with Warm Springs is detailed in the HBO movie of the same name.)
The house is open to the public, and is just as it was the day Roosevelt passed away.
The nearby Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation was founded in 1927 by the president as a hospital for polio patients. It’s still very much in use as a treatment center for many disabilities.
