An early morning, 6.2-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks hit central Italy on Wednesday, killing at least 73 people, displacing scores more, and damaging dozens of buildings.

USA Today reports that the towns of Umbria, Lazio, and Marche – about 80 to 100 miles northeast of Rome – sustained the most damage. Another town, Amatrice, was badly hit as well.

With many roadways blocked from debris, it has been hard for rescue workers to quickly get through and administer aid. Power was also knocked out, making it difficult for responders to communicate with each other.
