New York is reaping the benefits of a thriving cruise industry.

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the global cruise industry contributed $1.24 billion to the Empire State’s economy in 2014 — accounting for 5.9 percent of the industry’s nationwide spending.

According to CLIA’s 2014 Economic Impact Analysis, the expenditures generated 15,890 jobs and $971 million in salaries and wages.

Last year, New York cruise terminals welcomed 853,000 passengers and crew members. Of that, 576,000 cruisers embarked from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal and the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

Overall, the global cruise industry generated $46.09 billion for the U.S. in 2014.
