Live Like A Vanderbilt In Newport
Thursday, April 29th, 2010
Visitors to Newport, R.I. have the opportunity to live the life of a Vanderbilt, now that British entrepreneur Peter de Savary runs Vanderbilt Hall. NY1′s Valarie D’Elia filed the following report.
Want to get under the sheets inside a Vanderbilt mansion without being shown the door? A Newport landmark straight out of the Gilded Age is now taking reservations after a change in ownership.
Built a hundred years ago for Alfred Vanderbilt’s mistress, Vanderbilt Hall has now slipped into the hands of British entrepreneur Peter de Savary, who has reinvented the property as a suite hotel and private members’ club.
With a multimillion-dollar investment, de Savary appears to honor two of his greatest loves, his award-winning chihuahua, Monty, and his passion for American illustration art, a private collection of which adorns the ornate walls.
The hotel is designed to evoke what is described as a “house party” atmosphere that channels the Roaring Twenties. Each of the 33 suites, ranging from 400 to 3000 square feet, is graciously decorated with high-tech touches.
Dining at Vanderbilt Hall puts the emphasis on traditional British flavors, with dishes such as a gastro-pub style fish and chips.
Many of the original details are preserved, including Alfred’s snooker table, a form of British billiards. A heated vintage pool is located downstairs and there is an outdoor pool under construction.
Just in time for the summer high season, a refurbished rooftop deck offers scenic views of downtown Newport.
A very exclusive spa, featuring Yon-ka products from Paris, reserves treatments for members and hotel guests only.
A special launch rate for Travel with Val viewers is subject to availability at $375 a night through the end of May with accommodations in a studio for two. This includes breakfast, dinner, and valet parking. Visit www.vanderbilthall.com or call 1-401-846-6200 for details.
