There’s nothing like hitting the open road – especially when you bring your best four-legged friend with you.

1. Before your trip, take your pooch on a short ride to the park to make the car a place where fun things happen.
2. Test his or her travel crate beforehand and reward your pal with treats so he or she knows the crate is a safe, happy place.
3. Give your dog a back or belly rub while playing soothing music as you’re cruising down the road.
4. Bring along your dog’s favorite toys. Once you arrive at the destination, set up the crate and food bowls, stick to a normal feeding schedule, and maintain your walking routine.
5. Reward good behavior to build positive associations with new surroundings.
